Unlike a number of the other races at the festival the Champion Bumper will bring a whole new breed of recruits to our attention and as such we have just a small amount of form to go on.
Dermot Weld has the ante post favourite for the race in Elegant Concord who won like his name suggests on St Stephens Day at the Leopardstown Christmas festival.
At Leopardstown on the 23rd January we got to see another really nice Dermot Weld bumper in Hidden Universe who eased to a facile victory in the Cheltenham Bumper and this is another to keep your eye on over the next few weeks
No Champion Bumper is without a Willie Mullins talking horse and we got to his his main contender for the race, Day Of A Lifetime at Fairyhouse on the 16th February. This was an impressive debut where he quickened well off a slow pace, he settled well and when he travelled through to challenge early in the straight he quickened up smartly and kept up the gallop to the line.
The home challenge could well come from, yes you guessed it the Paul Nicholls yard after he was given the Irish trained Al Ferof after his win in Ireland in December at Fairyhouse. His first British run was at Newbury on the 13th February where he was never far from the action and it looks like he needs a distance and his participation may depend on the conditions being soft.
