The Cheltenham Festival is highlight of the season for the hunter chase brigade. The Christie’s Foxhunter Chase is one of the oldest races at the Festival. The first running in 1904 was won by the 6/4 favourite Palmy Boy, owned and ridden by Mr J Widger. It is now the richest and most prestigious hunter chase of the season, worth a total of £40,000.
The major stables are usually represented and are fiercely contested between the Irish and UK based trainers. This contest is run over three miles about two and a half furlongs and a premium is put on the jumping and this is why experience nearly always plays a factor.
In 2003 a young pretender by the name of Kingscliff took on the establish hunters and came out well on top. Later it became clear that this young horse had potential to take on the grade 1 thoroughbreds.
This year there are 49 entries bidding to land the season’s top hunter chase, the Christie’s Foxhunter Chase, including smart French performer Roulez Cool, now trained by Cheltenham Racecourse director Robert Waley-Cohen and the mount of his son Sam.
Baby Run, who finished third in last season’s Christies Foxhunter Chase, could represent trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and his son Sam, while the 2008 winner Amicelli is also among the entries. Sheila Crow, who saddled Cappa Bleu to win last year’s race, could run Unowatimeeen.
We shall display the odds for this race once the runners are available and the bookmakers put up a betting market.
The trend for Hunter Chasers in the UK is for older National Hunt horses to have another opportunity to shine and the Hunter Chaser come out in January to try and qualify for the Cheltenham feature
Come the Festival we will endeavour to look into this race in more detail but we have a Hunter Chase tip that may well pay dividends in our Tips section.
